1 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within assigned AO. Heavy mortars continued to remain in general support of the battalion. Company D began construction on 50 Cal parapets to enable them to have anti-air capability against enemy helicopters. Remainder of the day was spent on training, maintenance of equipment, FSB security and improvement.

Plans: All elements will place emphasis on maintenance of equipment, and FSB security.

 

2 October 1968

Called into S-1 at 1535.

Summary: The Golden Dragons continue SRP operations within the assigned AO. Heavy mortar platoon continued to be in general support of the battalion. Reference items 20 and 29 final investigation reports will be forwarded to this headquarters when completed by 1st Bde.

Plans: All elements will continue to train individuals on SRP procedures, FSB security and FSB improvement.

 

3 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Heavy mortar Platoon remains in general support of the battalion. Remainder of the day was spent on resupplying elements, training and FSB security.

Plans: All companies will place emphasis on training, SRP procedures, and FSB improvements.

 

4 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. 1-14 CO briefed key officers and NCO personnel at FSB 30 on rules of engagement, Division cmdr policies, battalion cmdr policies, principle of offense and defensive tactics. SRP procedures that will be adhered to while engaging enemy force. Remainder of day was spent resupplying units.

Plans: Heavy mortar platoon continues to be in general support of the battalion. All elements will continue to train individuals on Rules of engagement as set forth by the battalion commander.

 

5 October 1968

0900-0901: To S-4 from NCS. Effective at 0900 SOI change for Admin Log push all elements have been notified including Bde S-3 Air. (40.50)

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within assigned AO. Heavy Mortar Platoon continued to remain in general support of the Battalion. Remainder of the day was spent on resupplying elements of FSB.

Plans: All companies will continue to train individuals on small unit tactics (SRP), and improve security measures on each FSB.

 

6 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within assigned AO. Heavy Mortar Platoon continued to remain in general support of the Battalion. Remainder of the day was spent on resupplying elements on FSB. Also it was passed to all elements that NO member ot 1-14 will have in his possession a privately owned weapon. If a member has one he it to turn it in to the arms room in Pleiku.

Plans: All companies continue to train individuals on small unit tactics (SRP), and improve security measures of each FSB.

 

7 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within assigned AO. Heavy Mortar Platoon remains in general support of the battalion. Remainder of day was spent on training and resupplying units on various FSB’s.

Plans: All units will continue to improve SRP training techniques and FSB security.

 

8 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within assigned AO. Heavy mortar platoon remains in general support of the battalion. Remainder of the day spent on training and resupplying of units on various FSB’s.

Plans: Request Engineer support to lay a Bouncing Betty type mine field with location center of mass YB 892444 with a width of 100 meters and length of 100 meters. Request for approval has been forwarded to higher headquarters. All elements will continue to place emphasis on training and FSB security.

 

9 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Heavy Mortar Platoon remains in general support of the battalion. Remainder of the day was spent on training, FSB security and improvements.

Plans: All elements will continue to emphasis training on SRP security missions.

 

10 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Heavy Mortar Platoon remains in general support of the battalion. Remainder of the day was spent on resupplying elements at assigned FSB’s.

Plans: Received Frag orders from Bde for Company D and Recon platoon will move by hook from FSB 31 to Kontum Bridge and assume bridge security mission at that location. Company D will move to location YB 187717 and will establish a company fire base at that location. Remainder of the battalion will remain at present locations. Company D and Recon will revert back to OP/CON to 3rd Brigade.

 

11 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Heavy Mortar Platoon remains in general support of the battalion. FSB 31 was closed out and all bunkers were destroyed by Engineers. Recon element moved to Kontum Bridge for Bridge security. D/1-14 moved to Dak To to remain overnight, then to move to Duc Co. Remainder of the day was spent on training and resupplying units on various FSB’s.

Plans: Heavy mortar element at Dak Seang will move to FSB 33 , formally known as Mortar Mountain. D/1-14 will be going to YZ 766327 which is near Duc Co and become OP/CON to 3-8 Infantry.

 

12 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Heavy Mortar Platoon remains in general support of the battalion. Heavy mortar element moved from Dak Seang to FSB 33 closing at 1448. D/1-14 moved to the Oasis and stayed overnight.

Plans: D/1-14 will continue their move from the Oasis to YZ 766327. All elements will continue to emphasize training on SRP security mission.

 

13 October 1968

1205-1206: To S-4 from S-3. To Lt. Proegler and S-4 Bn, S-3 has authorized Lt. Proegler to draw the ASR items for this period for D/1-14. Green Smoke-4, 40mm canister-29, 40mm HE-288, 81mm Illum-53, 81mm HE-322. Insure that your ammo man receives this message also that Support Platoon leader gets this info.

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Heavy Mortar Platoon remains in general support of the battalion. 1st Bde CO escorted a party from DA Department of Defense which visited this location and received a short briefing from 1-14 CO. The party departed at 1720. Remainder of the day was spent on training, FSB security and improvements.

Plans: All elements will continue to emphasize training on SRP security missions.

 

14 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Heavy Mortar Platoon remains in general support of the battalion. Remainder of the day was spent on training, FSB security and resupplying all elements.

Plans: Battalion received FRAGO to be prepared to move on 15 Oct with companies A and C mortar platoon (-) HQ (-) to the Ocasis and two squads of 4.2mm to LZ Mary Lou. Upon arrival to Oasis Bn (-) will remain overnight and move the following day by convoy to Duc Co. When Bn has closed Duc Co they will then be airlifted to LZ Karen and occupy assigned AO.

 

15 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons completed its move from FSB 30 to Oasis without sustaining any difficulties during continued air and road movements.

Plans: Bn (-) will move from Oasis to Duc Co by convoy. Upon arrival at RP the battalion (-) will be airlifted to LZ Karen. Company A will C/A to LZ and secure fire base for incoming elements of the battalion. Order of march will be Company A, Company C, HQ (-) and 4.2 (-).

 

16 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons completed its combined moves to LZ Karen. SRP were employed within assigned AO. Construction by all elements has begun at LZ Karen. All elements are being resupplied with critical items of equipment.

Plans: All elements will continue to place all efforts on overhead cover and bunker construction.

 

17 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Remainder of day was spent on resupplying and construction on LZ Karen.

Plans: Continuing efforts will be made to construct firing bunkers and command bunkers. Engineers will continue to support critical areas of construction.

 

18 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Remainder of day was spent on resupplying and construction on LZ Karen.

Plans: Continuing efforts will be made to construct firing bunkers and command bunkers. Engineers will continue to support critical areas of construction.

 

19 October 1968

1739-1740: To Bn from Bde. SOI change from 3rd Bde LRP. New frequency 61.80, Call signs remains same. In effect 19 Oct 68. (C)

20 October 1968

1515-1516: To Bde S-3 from Bn S-3. SOI change will go into effect as of now. 3-8 Inf Admin Log will be 42.75. (C)

21 October 1968

23 October 1968

1235-1236: To Bn from Bde. SOI change effective 230001 Oct 68. 2nd bde Command A-66.60, call sign "DOGRATTLE".

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Remainder of day was spent on resupplying and construction on LZ Karen.

Plans: Continuing efforts will be made to construct firing bunkers and command bunkers. Engineers will continue to support critical areas of construction.

 

24 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Remainder of day was spent on resupplying and construction on LZ Karen.

Plans: Continuing efforts will be made to construct firing bunkers and Battalion Aid Station. Engineers will continue to support critical areas of construction. B/1-14 will be alerted to move from LZ Mary Lou to a location unannounced as of 2400.

 

25 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within the assigned AO. Remainder of day was spent on resupplying and construction and improvement of LZ Karen.

Plans: All defense efforts will be made on construction of bunker and the fortification of LZ Karen.

 

26 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within their assigned AO. At 1600 this date the Golden Dragons assumed control of the AO around LZ Mary S. At the same time B/3-8 become OP/CON to 1-14 Inf.

Plans: Strict emphasis will be placed on continued bunker construction and fortification of LZ’s in our AO.

 

27 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within their assigned AO.

Plans: B/1-14 will move from LZ Mary Lou to LZ Mary S and return to parent unit control. Continuing construction of bunkers and fortification of all LZ’s in our AO.

 

28 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within their assigned AO. B/1-14 moved from LZ Mary Lou to LZ Mary S returning to parent unit control. B/3-8 moved from LZ Mary S to LZ Vera returning to parent unit control.

Plans: Continuing construction of bunkers and fortification of all LZ’s in our AO.

 

29 October 1968

0215-0216: 2-8 Command 34.60 – Sample Cadet

C/7-17 Command 56.90 – Vivid Serum

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within their assigned AO. A and C/1-14 alerted to move on a 2 hour notice. A/1-14 air lifted off of LZ Karen and went OP/CON to 1-35.

Plans: Continuing construction of bunkers and fortification of all LZ’s in our AO. Airlift of

A/1-14 back to LZ Karen is expected tomorrow.

 

30 October 1968

Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within their assigned AO. A/1-14 was OP/CON to 1-35 at LZ Chief.

Plans: Continue to improve bunker fortification and fields of fire on all LZ’s within our AO.

 

Late Entry: On 29 October Company A passed OP/CON to 1-35 Inf and conducted a C/A to ZA956161. On 30 October at these coordinates at 0450 - - 2 rounds of friendly 155 artillery landed in the Company NL area wounding 5 persons. On 30 Oct Company A conducted another C/A to ZA 932148 and established a blocking position and NL with B/1-35 Inf. On 31 October they returned OP/CON to 1-14 Inf. No enemy was contacted during the operation.

 


Summary: The Golden Dragons continued SRP operations within their assigned AO. A/1-14 returned OP/CON to 1-14.

Plans: Continue to improve bunkers, fortifications and fields of fire on all LZ’s within our AO.
